Composition and Structure
When we began discussing the pattern of our choreography, we created a google document that we shared with each member of the group to allow equal interpretation. The beginning of the piece starts with a heartbeat sound, we wanted the audience to feel the stress of COVID-19 at the very start of the piece. The significance of the beginning section is to show the spread of te virus by having contact with one another and random duets.
The next section has the intent of building into something more
highlighted within the piece as the music has more elements and movements
within the section have more dynamics and a quicker tempo. We created the
build-up for this section because the restriction of going into lockdown is
portrayed and we wanted the audience to feel the fear and uncertainty that we
all experienced during that time. The highlighted part in this section is the
solos that we each perform due to it showing different interpretations of
people in lockdown. For example, my solo is focused on school and how the
anxiety about grades intensified during the lockdown because students didn't
know what to do.
The third section focuses on the end of the lockdown when restrictions
were lifted and new health advice was given. We have two phrases within this
section; the first phrase focuses on the clap for NHS. The next phase is
portraying the COVID-19 vaccinations. We focused on these moments during
lockdown to have the contrast of light and shade in the piece.
The fourth section is focused on the sorrowful reality of the virus as
we portray a death scene. Max, another member of the group performs a solo in
the back corner as the rest of the group show slow movements to reinforce the
melancholic feel that this section has. The purpose of this section is to show
how people's actions had consequences during COVID-19.
The last section of our choreography is focused around the words 'We'll
meet again'. For this, I was inspired by Wayne McGregor and how he describes
creating choreography by focusing on a word. Wayne Mcgregor- Tedtalk (Mcgregor 2012) We wanted to show
movements that had a nostalgic feel as the song has a similar aesthetic. Our
focus and aim were to show that after the loneliness and isolation feel from
lock-down that we can now be there for one another. I get lifted through the
lyrics 'Keep smiling through' to show the helping aid that people gave one
another.
Throughout our choreography piece, we have maintained the intention of
showing the audience different perspectives of the Corona Virus because we all
stay on stage throughout the piece. We have used split focus with duets and
trios to show the similarities between people's dancing/ the effect that the
virus had on them. I think this effectively communicates our story to the
audience because we keep the audience engaged by having multiple correlating
narratives performed.
